Plovdiv – The Cultural Capital of Europe -2019
Plovdiv was rightly the European capital of Culture in 2019. The second-largest city in Bulgaria has been a part of history since eight millennials. From the signs of settlement as early as 6th millennium BCE to the Thracian and Roman era, the Byzantine to the latest Ottoman rule, it has stood the test of time.
A lot to see and explore, it is a must-visit place for everyone visiting Bulgaria. A walk through the old town and the surrounding areas can give you a glimpse into the rich history of the place.
The city boasts of more than 200 archaeological sites with the most famous one being the ancient theater which could accommodate up to 7000 people in its heyday. Do not forget to visit the Eirene residence, a public building that belonged to a noble citizen, the place has some amazing mosaics which are well-preserved.
The archaeological museum, The Plovdiv regional history museum, The Plovdiv regional ethnographic museum, The museum of natural science, and the museum of aviation can keep you engaged for a day.
March to September would be an ideal time to visit the city, the months of May and June you might encounter quite a bit of rain so be prepared accordingly. August is typically the hottest month of the year, so walks in the afternoons can get a bit taxing on the stone paved uphill streets.:) .
Here are a few photographs from my walk across the city. Have you seen the photos from the art capital Veliko Tarnovo ? Or the beautiful landscapes from Bulgaria?
